Thinkin bout electronica

I don't know how I survived long-distance travel before mp3s. You can only carry around so many cassettes or CDs. When I leave the house for a trip my earbuds are pretty much a permanent fixture until I am home again. At home, if I'm at my computer, I'm probably listening to something all the time. I listen to lots of different genres of music, but overall my standard, fall back is something within the electronic realm. Read more about Thinkin bout electronica

Book Review: Front End Drupal

Front End DrupalI managed to get my hands on a pre-release version of a new Drupal book that just came out this week. The book is Front End Drupal and it is written by Emma Jane Hogbin and Konstantin Kaefer. The book says on the cover, Designing, Theming, Scripting, and I'm excited to see another book that really gets into Drupal 6 theming. When we, at Lullabot, wrote Using Drupal and we had to draw the line at a basic intro to theming, I was looking for a book to carry that forward. Since I am lucky enough to have myself a copy and found some time to sit down and read it, I thought I'd share my thoughts for those that may be trying to decide whether to order it (short answer is "yes"). Learning About Leaders

I am not a great follower of politics nor of modern history (modern meaning anything after the Roman Empire, ;-) I'm an ancient history freak). I've been fascinated by Barack Obama, not just from the plain emotional freedom from the Bush years he represents, but also his steady rise as a leader in my mind. By that I mean the way in which he made myself and many, many other people believe that he is a leader for me. What makes great leaders? What makes people rally and believe in an individual, faults and all? This doesn't just happen in politics, though that is a great stage. Read more about Learning About Leaders

In My Headphones: Hoots and Hellmouth

Last week I had a work trip up to Penn State University for a few days. It is so close (only three hours by car) that it made more sense for me to drive up than fly. I twiddled with the radio for a while before I finally gave up and popped in a CD. I ended up sticking in one that I haven't listened to for a while, which Colleen and I picked up after seeing the band live last year. We'd never heard of the opener for the band we went to see, Po' Girls. Hoots and Hellmouth not only warmed up the crowd but got everyone up on their feet and stomping along. They are an amazing live band. They dropped a board on the floor and stomped, clapped, danced, played and sang 'til the crowd couldn't help itself. The music is indie rock where you can feel the country/bluegrass/gospel roots right under your feet. The shows are tent revivals for rockers. Read more about In My Headphones: Hoots and Hellmouth

The quest for fiction

Now that the Drupal book I am helping co-author is off to the editors, I'm finding a desire to read again in my newly (and temporarily) free evenings. I'm definitely in an escapist mood, so I've turned to good ole scifi and fantasy fiction. The only problem is that I am a finicky reader. Everyone has their own flavor or pickiness when it comes to books I think. It doesn't help that I can't articulate what I like or don't like very well. Read more about The quest for fiction

Pater hemon (cough) ho en tois ouranois

Ah well, I am sick once again. I managed to get the flu for the second time this year. I haven't had the flu for 10 years prior to this. The fever is now gone but it has moved on to bronchitis and it's just not very fun. It is however giving me time to blog. I have to say that I think the added stressors of the freelance work and the addition for the house have been enough to make me noticably sicker this year. Bleh. In My Headphones: Fluke

So, recently I have been stuck on Fluke. They may be most well known to the general population (if at all) for the "sex/rave scene" music in The Matrix Reloaded, a track called Zion. Unless you listen to stuff like Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method and Underworld you probably haven't heard of them. Read more about In My Headphones: Fluke

I Talk Good

Here is site that is great for getting all riled up over language, Common Errors in English. One of my favorite parts is the Non-Errors page. I am certainly not the grammarian that I was raised to be but boy-howdy there are some errors out there that just really get under my skin. One phrase that makes me nuts is "Could care less" since I have actually found myself saying it! Read more about I Talk Good

In My Headphones: Imogen Heap

I am not into music to the same degree I used to be years ago but I do have a nice big 30GB mp3 player that has a full range of music on it that I use for the commute back and forth to the big city. Now, I occasionally I go to random mode or even genre but most of the time I scroll through, find an artist I want to listen to and pretty keep playing it until I get sick of it. That normally means I listen to one artist or album for at least 3 or 4 days and often a week or more. Over and over again, an hour each way, each day. Read more about In My Headphones: Imogen Heap

An Interpretation

A spontaneous interpretation of a classic by my very self and Colleen around 6 a.m. this morning, inspired by Romeo (codename: Ro).

Row, Row.
Row your boat ashore.
Hallelu, Hallelu.

Michael. Read more about An Interpretation
