Upgrading to Drupal 7

So rocktreesky is finally running on Drupal 7. I upgraded the site a few weeks ago and thought I'd share my experience. This is a very simple blog site so my upgrade process was fairly simple and easier than it would be for almost any other site out there, although the overall approach is going to be the same with most sites. I got the site upgraded in a weekend, but even as stripped down as this site is, I had to drop features to complete the upgrade. On the flip side, Drupal 7 provided a bunch of little niceties that meant I could remove some custom code from my theme (and overall I really like theming with Drupal 7). Overall, the upgrade was pretty painless for me, but I wouldn't recommend firing up an upgrade for most sites right now, unless you have the time and resources to put some muscle into it. I'll walk through my process and some decisions I made to see why I come to this conclusion. Read more about Upgrading to Drupal 7

Setting up a new server

I've been playing around a lot with my site, doing an upgrade from Drupal 6 to 7. I also decided to set up a new server on Linode to give them a try (I've heard great things about them). I'm an Ubuntu gal so I had to choose between the LTS (Long Term Service) or the latest. Of course, I ended up picking the latest release, Natty Narwhal (It's a Narwhal!). Once I clicked a button or two to install the new and boot it up, I needed to do some work to make an actual useful web server. Here are my notes from getting things up and running. These aren't extensive notes with lots of explanation, but it is enough for me to get through the process without wasting several hours. Take them for what you want. To Be A Geek - Geek Girl Meetup CPH

This Friday I am returning briefly to my favorite city, Copenhagen, only to shoot off again and go on vacation for the first time in years (that's a whole post in and of itself). On Saturday it turns out that there will be a event called Geek Girl Meetup Copenhagen (in Danish). There was such a huge response that the organizers had to close registration until they could find a larger venue. Hell yeah!

I signed up out of reflex even though it will be largely in Danish (um, jeg taler ikke Dansk?). I mean, I'm a geek. And I'm a girl. And all of the geek girls I know in Copenhagen are going too (and apparently a ton who I don't know). Even if I can't understand many of the sessions, I'll be spending my time chatting up with other girls who identify as geeks. Then today, one of those friends, Mary, went ahead and posted something thoughtful about it all, passing on Henriette Weber's blog baton. I do indeed have some thoughts on geekiness. (Jeez, Mary, making me blog and all.) Read more about To Be A Geek - Geek Girl Meetup CPH

Interview on Blogher

A few weeks ago Virginia DeBolt interviewed me and the interview is now up on Blogher. This is part of Virginia's Women in Tech series, which kicked of with a great interview with Shelley Powers. Read more about Interview on Blogher

There is more to the web than Drupal

Now, obviously, I'm going to Do it With Drupal, because I work for Lullabot. I also think that it will be a great event for people to learn about many, many aspects of Drupal all in one place and I look forward to hanging out with folks and sharing the Drupal love. But, I have to admit my real personal excitement about this - all the non-Drupal presentations. Seriously, I hope my work schedule there doesn't have me miss too many presentations that I really want to make. Read more about There is more to the web than Drupal

Some site stats

Just because I find this kind of thing interesting to me, I'm posting up some stats from my site. I wanted a place to just sort of capture a snapshot and putting it on the blog seems to make sense. This is not a heavy traffic site; the average total hits on the site are about 1800 a month, though this month I will go over 3000. (I've been getting more traffic recently due posts about my becoming doc lead and being a featured speaker on the Drupalcon DC site.) I am not combing server logs or using anything like Google Analytics, I use a program called Mint. Read more about Some site stats

I "get" Twitter

I never, ever thought I would utter those words. I am kind of a cranky old lady when it comes to "Web 2.0 social boogyboo blah blah" talk. I don't have a Facebook account (and won't get one no matter how many times I get spammed with requests) and I don't use things like del.icio.us. I'm sure they are useful, but they just don't work in my "flow." I don't "get" them in my life. Read more about I "get" Twitter

Ack, I'm a Mac convert

Getting my new MacBook Pro has been a much longer story than it ever should have been and I'm not going to go into all of the gory details. It started by ordering one online and then two days later Apple announced the release of the new Core 2 Duo. Eh, hey that is a better machine for the same damned price I paid for the old one! Suffice it to say that I have been the owner of a new Core 2 Duo 15" MBP for two weeks now. And I am freakin' loving it. I still love Ubuntu and will keep using it on my desktop but I really am impressed with what Apple has going here. Read more about Ack, I'm a Mac convert

Google Loves Me, This I Know

for the search results tell me so.

I have to say that I was pretty surprised when I discovered a hit to my site for a Google search on "drupal theme building freelance" (and was pleased that it translated into my first international client). Out of curiosity I did the search and I was truly shocked to be the fourth hit, right after Ted Serbinski, who I learned drupal theming from. I've since dropped to page two of google results for that search, but I'm still pretty damned pleased. Read more about Google Loves Me, This I Know

Desktop Blogging: Ecto and Live Writer

UPDATE: I have written a more current, relevant post comparing Ecto and MarsEdit, March 30, 2008.

Always in the pursuit of more toys, um, I mean tools, I have been trying out two desktop blogging applications. What's that mean, you ask? This is software that you install on your computer that will let you write and publish posts to your online blog. That means that I am currently writing this post from my laptop and I don't have an internet connection. When I'm done and I get back to an internet connection all I have to do is publish it. The reason I am looking at this type of tool is because I am a train commuter and I do a lot of work on the train. Normally I am coding away but I'd like to have a convenient way to write posts for my websites as I think of them. Sure, I can write something up in a word processor but then I have to copy and paste all of it when I log in to my site and if I am using pictures I have to upload the pictures and add them in too. What a pain. I am also checking this out for potentially recommending it to clients who have similar needs (or just don't like composing on a web page).
